Know Your Body Intimately (Part 2 of 5)
As my life has changed in amazingly bad and amazingly good ways since 2009, my family and I have made a commitment to each other and to ourselves to be healthier. Over a series I am calling Know Your Body Know Yourself, I am sharing what we have learned and how we are changing our lives for the better.
Please note I am not a doctor and do not play a doctor on tv. This is not medical advice; it is the story of my journey and my opinion. Do not make changes that impact your health without the guidance of a trusted physician
Knowing your body intimately means understanding our bodies are different. I don’t just mean men are different from women. I also mean that between ME and YOU our bodies are different even if we’re both women in our thirties who have had babies and other similarities. Just as the Bible tells us, we are all unique. The western medical or traditional medical community has a hard time wrapping their heads around this idea.
I recently had blood tests completed which showed my blood is normal under the traditional medical definition of normal range. I have learned (the hard way) normal doesn’t mean healthy. While I am not gluten intolerant I have a condition that is best served by being on a gluten-free diet. The condition is called “leaky gut” and was only identified by my naturopath. As soon as I adjusted the food I was eating I felt amazingly better!
Like many Americans I have struggled with losing and subsequently gaining weight. Knowing my body intimately means understanding my body will lose weight on low fat processed foods AND my body will gain weight. My husband and kids can eat different food from me and from each other because we are learning about how our bodies operate at top condition.
We noticed significant changes in our children when we decreased their intake of processed foods and increased foods close to the earth – fruits, vegetables, meats and nuts. We’re a Paleo family because we know it works for us. We are learning to know our bodies intimately and teaching our kids the same.
